On the BET Surface Area of Nanocellulose Determined Using Volumetric, Gravimetric and Chromatographic Adsorption Methods

Volumetric N 2 adsorption at ?196°C is generally accepted as “gold standard” for estimating the Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area of nanocellulose. It unclear however, whether BET nanocellulose obtained such low temperatures and pressures meaningful an absolute sense, used ambient temperature pressure. In this work, a systematic evaluation using highly crystalline bacterial cellulose (BC) model was undertaken to achieve comprehensive understanding limitations method volumetric compared with acquired from gravimetric experiments based on n-octane dynamic vapour sorption (DVS) determined by inverse gas chromatography (iGC), both 25°C. found that calculated data 25% lower than 25°C DVS iGC methods. These results supported hypothesis molecular scale (N vs n-octane, cross section 0.162 nm 0.646 ) (?196°C 25°C) dependent property. This study also demonstrates importance selecting appropriate pressure range established criteria would suggest room measurement more relevant many applications.
